I posted about Dick York earlier. He led a remarkable life and he faced his health problems with the adage ‘be happy’.

Dick York was an actor best known for his portrayal of Darrin in the 1960′s television sitcom Bewitched.
The show was a great success and Dick was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1968.

Samuel Beckett – author, critic and playwright. He won the 1969 Nobel Prize for Literature.
He was born in Dublin on the 13th of April 1906.

Rock singer/musician Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was found dead in Seattle of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 8th of April 1994. He was 27 years old.
His suicide note was said to have contained a quote from Neil Young’s song “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)”:
“It’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

Henry Ford died on this day in 1947.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the death of Tammy Wynette. Tammy died on April the 6th 1998 at the age of 55. Tammy performs some of her most popular songs on the video.
The person who introduces Tammy on the video is none other than the actor Robert Urich. Urich died in 2002 as result of a rare form of cancer. He was 56 when he died.

Martin Luther King Jr., American Civil Rights leader, was assassinated on the 4th of April 1968.
His assassin, James Earl Ray, died in prison in 1998 at the age of 70.
His most famous speech “I Have a Dream”, was delivered on the 28th of August 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.

Oscar Wilde took a libel case against the Marquess of Queensberry (famous for the ‘Marquess of Queensberry rules’ associated with boxing). The Marquess had accussed Wilde of being a sodomite.
The case opened on the 3rd of April 1895 but was withdrawn shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, for Wilde, it led to him being charged and convicted of gross indecency.
Wilde received a sentence of two years’ hard labour.
Wilde wrote the poem ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol‘ after his release from prison.

Mary Pickford (1893-1979) delighted filmgoers from 1909 to 1933. She had beautiful blonde curls and she was the most beloved and famous female movie star of the silent era. Crowds mobbed her wherever she went.
Mary was born in Toronto, Canada on the 8th of April 1893. She became a child actress at the age of five.
Posted March 26, 2008 Comments(2) Richard Widmark, the actor who portrayed killers, cowboys and cops has died at the age of 93.
His first film was called ‘Kiss of Death (1947) and in it he portrays psychopathic killer Tommy Udo who giggles as he pushes an old woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs.
Another star of the black and white era silently slips away.
